Africa Lite!

Today's day-long stop in Casablanca, Moroco was the greatest layover I've ever experienced.  Royal Air Maroc knows what its doing.  From the moment we arrived in Casablanca everything has been on the house as we were wisked via shuttle to the Atlas Hotel for a free lunch, dinner, and hotel room.  Now, after two hot showers, a nap, some CNN, and a wireless connection to the blog we are off to the airport once more to finally make the connection that will drop us in Accra at two in the morning on the 28th of December.  It will ultimately be about 40 hours of travel from the time we left our home

Meshach here we come

I know for sure that when Laura and I first arrived in Ghana in 2003 I never thought I would return again so soon.  Now, I'm returning for the 3rd time in just 6 years?  There are those places in the world where you visit and just know you have to get back there, but to be honest Ghana was not one of them for me or for Laura.  I guess we never counted on the power of friendship and the feeling of family.  These are the reasons we continue to return to Michigan two or three times a year despite its gray sky and sprawling strip malls.  So, why couldn't these same forces bring us across the Atlan

One day to Go...

Here we are, done counting down, tomorrow we leave for Ghana.  I just checked and we have reached and surpassed our goal!!!  As Ed said, I can't believe we are actually going.  Thank you everyone for your support and donations.  Folks from all the different parts of my life have been calling and saying it is great what we are doing.  I tell them it is not such a big deal; this is what we are supposed to do if we are presented with the opportunity.  Happy holidays to everyone.

  • Highlander and PROFESA Students Connect!

Thursday was an exciting afternoon in Providence, RI as 11 middle school students got to chat live via Yahoo Messenger with 10 students studying across the globe in Abeka, Ghana.  This chat only lasted one hour and at times the connection slowed communication, but it was the perfect meeting between the two eager groups of students. Students chatted about favorite foods, which led to questions about traditional Ghanaian dishes like Banku and Fufu.  Highlander students introduced themselves as Puerto Rican and Colombian Americans, which was surprising to the Ghanaian students who were unsure wh

Meshach and African Leaders See Bright Future in Obama Victory

I received this e-mail from Meshach this morning.

    Shawn,

Today Americans have shown their democratic power. This is a great transition, not just a transition, but with great opportunities. America is starting another journey to a higher level and I pray and hope you get there.

Excitement and Frustration All In the Same Hour

I woke up this morning incredibly excited that today would be our first live chat between the PROFESA students in Ghana and the Highlander Community Service Board, but it just wasn't meant to be. We were scheduled to chat at noon Eastern Standard Time which is 4pm in Ghana.  We logged on using yahoo messenger, but the PROFESA students were nowhere to be found.  Using my international calling card I was able to phone Meshach who was frantically doing his best to get the internet on his end of the world to work.  Unfortunately their connection proved too slow to support the Yahoo chat. By the

Highlander and Moses Brown Students Continue Last Year's Computer Palooza Success

It was a tentative yet exciting day at Moses Brown's Middle School today as 6th, 7th and 8th graders from the Highlander Charter School Community Service Board met for the first time with Moses Brown's Middle School Community Service Board. Students worked together on an ice breaker activity and shared their ideas and goals for this partnership that is now in its second year.  Last year Moses Brown and Highlander students worked together to create Computer Palooza, which was a talent show featuring the best talent from both schools with all proceeds going towards the purchase of computers for
