PROFESA Students Enjoy their New Space

The PROFESA Academy, a non-profit vocational training school in Abeka, Ghana, is booming with activity and learning.  After changing the school's focus in January of 2010 to give a greater emphasis to computer and technology training, the academy saw an initial dip in enrollment.  The students did not stay away long however, and currently the school is back to serving more than 40 young men and women.  

Gone are the courses in short-hand, stenography, and typing.  Instead, students are now being trained in Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, networking, data entry, and web development.  In addition to these computer classes, students are also enrolled in accounting, business entrepreneurship, and English courses.

The Academy's new goal is to become the premiere training ground for Ghana's next generation of computer technicians, data entry professionals, and web designers.  Many for-profit companies are popping up all over Ghana training students in these skills, but most of these institutions are charging close to $1,200 for a three month course.  The PROFESA Academy only charges $30 per month for students to take as many courses as they wish. 

Thanks to Longitude donors, most of the young women who attend PROFESA do so on a full or partial scholarship.  PROFESA is still the only non-profit school in Abeka that serves young adults who would otherwise not be able to afford high school or a job training academy.  If it were not for PROFESA all 40 of these students would be selling goods under the hot sun on the busy streets of Accra.
