The Winter Trip Volunteer group, lead by Denise Schlickbernd, has recently returned from Chevuru, India with stories of their amazing experience!

Karl Hoeschen shares some of his experience with us here.

“I felt welcome in Chevuru village from day one.  The people’s excitement, affection and appreciation for our presence easily poured through any language barriers.  Adults and children both constantly thanked me just for being there.  The intensity of their gratitude towards me and the other volunteers was almost alarming at times, and gave me some insight into how these villagers are treated everyday by regular society.

Having spent one very short week working alongside the Dalit villagers of Chevuru, I can say the experience was truly life-changing.  The villager’s determination to improve their situation made me feel honored to work alongside them.  The children showed similar vigor in their constant fervor for learning.  Seeing these qualities in everyone in Chevuru village gave me more self-prospective and refreshed my determination to improve as a teacher, husband and a general member of humanity.

I was also very grateful to have seen this side of India before traveling as a tourist.   When I was visiting the popular tourist areas, I got to experience the dodgy India I had read about in various travel blogs online.  In hindsight, I view my time in Chevuru village as seeing the real India.  Those days, by far are the part of my trip with the best memories.  For anyone who is thinking of visiting India, I cannot recommend enough that they volunteer with the Go Longitude program.”
